Environmental research enabled by miniaturization of an aerosol spectrometer and a sun photometer
Ru-Shan Gao (NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory)
Two recently developed instruments will be described in this talk. A Printed Optical Particle Spectrometer (POPS) and a miniature Scanning Aerosol Sun Photometer (miniSASP) were designed for ambient aerosol and aerosol optical density (AOD) measurements. Small, light, and fairly inexpensive, these two instruments are ideal for small UAV and balloon applications. This talk will highlight three field projects that showcase these instruments’ applications on ground, in the lower and mid-troposphere, and in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. Exciting scientific results from these projects will be presented.
