Abstract:The Asian Summer Monsoon (ASM) system is shown by satellite observations (especially AURA/MLS, AQUA/AIRS and ACE-FTS) to be a significant driver in transport between the boundary layer and the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere (UT/LS). Satellite observations, although capturing the global impact on the seasonal scale, are unable to resolve the details of transport processes.  Analyses from global models provide descriptions of the region with much higher spatial and temporal resolutions but have large uncertainties mostly due to the representation of convection.  High-resolution airborne in situ observations will play a unique role in verifying the models and filling in the gap of our understanding.  The goal of this work is to identify outstanding transport issues based on satellite and model studies and to discuss how airborne observations may help address these issues. In particular, using NCAR Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model run in specified dynamics mode (WACCM-SD), we have investigated the interplay of convection and the large-scale monsoonal circulation in UT/LS transport.  Our result shows that the sub-seasonal scale oscillation of the anticyclone plays an essential role in transporting convectively pumped boundary layer pollutants into the stratosphere.
