                                                                           Abstract

Based on then a new concept, the Colorado State University narrowband sodium lidar has been deployed since August 1989 for observing the mesopause region of the earth atmosphere over Fort Collins, CO (40.6ºN, 105ºW). Till its relocation to Utah State University in April 2010, a number of innovations through the past two decades have allowed ever advancing modes of operation from nighttime temperature to 24 hour continuous simultaneous Na density, temperature and horizontal wind observations. This talk is to highlight the upper atmospheric sciences enabled by the CSU Na lidar at varied time scales, which provided the unique opportunity to the speaker and his former students for learning atmospheric dynamics and wave processes in gravity waves and tides, as well as seasonal and decadal variability in the mesopause (80-105 km) region.
